Volunteer Description:
International University (IU) is a private university in Cambodia focusing mainly on training health professionals to work in the healthcare sector. Most of the students come from rural parts of Cambodia. Fees are kept at a very low level (less than $1500 per year) as most students do not come from wealthy families. We are one of only two dental schools in Cambodia, and the most senior students are in year 4 of a 5 year program. More information about IU can be obtained from our website: www.iu.edu.kh .
Dentists, dental hygienists, dental therapists and dental assistants can participate in our program. Involvement is primarily working with students, teachers and patients at the IU Faculty of Dentistry in Phnom Penh.
We provide a wide range of dental services for mainly low-income Cambodian men, women and children, many of whom cannot afford private dental care. Costs to the patients are kept as low as possible (eg a simple restoration costs $2-$3). The teaching staff are primarily Cambodian dentists, however there are several (mainly part-time) expatriate staff.
The Faculty of Dentistry at International University is located on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, in the direction of the airport. It is in a growing area of town called Phnom Penh Thmei (“New Phnom Penh”?). The Faculty shares a building with the Faculties of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. Facilities include a library, a 30 chair dental clinic, a dental laboratory and many classrooms (all with LCD projectors). The new 30 chair clinic has the capacity to treat several hundred patients per day.
Most of the patients are treated by dental students, and volunteers will generally supervise and assist the students. There are also facilities for dentists to treat some patients themselves, and students can observe and assist. Teams are encouraged to apply.
