Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822 and a republic in 1889. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labour pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Volunteer Description:
Health care volunteering services will be provided at Aquiraz, Ceará, Brazil on Presidio Beach in a private health clinic. You will be working in close proximity to the beach with the closest location being Fortaleza, Brazil.

Patients will receive all types of dental procedures and medical procedures will be mostly surgical and are provided to children and adults in the local area. Medical teams must bring their own supplies.

There are opportunities for physicians and/or nurses to train nurses and other health care providers in clinical medical education.

There are opportunities for non-clinical volunteers to assist the dentist and doctor chairside. Teams are encouraged to apply.

Requirements:
Brazil requires the following documentation prior to any health professional volunteering:
• U.S. Citizens must obtain a visa from the Brazilian consulate/embassy prior to approval. Apply early.
• Other Citizens check country guidelines.
• Portuguese language fluency helpful but not required.

Fees:
Volunteers are responsible for their flights,  accommodation and personal expenses. Each volunteer pays US$30.00 per day for room and board (accomodations and food). There is also a US$25.00 airport transfer each way.

Housing:
Pousada do Sol Inn (sometimes depending on the size of the mission, extra housing is provided). Our priority is providing the volunteers with a safe and comfortable environment. Breakfast, lunch and dinners are provided at the location that you are staying (depending on the size of the mission as well). Any special food needs must be informed in advance.

Internet Access:
There is an internet location about 15 minutes from the Presidio Beach (the area that you will be working). However, you need to tell the mission coordinator in advance so she can book a car to take you there (24 hrs prior)

Transport:
Since the Community Centre is only a three block walk, no transportation is required. If for some reason, a transport is going to be required, we will provide it!

What to bring:
A dental supplies list is going to be given so you can bring your material to work with. At Presidio’s Beach, the weather is hot all year long. You are going to be right at the ocean. It’s sunny every day (over 300 sunny days per year). You should have summer clothes with you, sandals and comfortable tennis shoes. A strong sun block is required for the whole mission.
