Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
Women of Means is a non-profit organization that sends volunteer medical professionals into shelters and soup kitchens in the Greater Boston Area to provide free medical care to homeless women and their accompanying children. To support the onsite care, the doctors provide their homeless patients with over-the-counter medicines and supplies.

Through the doctors? regular, predictable presence in safe places around the city, Women of Means builds trusting relationships with its patients. Women of Means does not duplicate existing services for the homeless. Rather, it provides a clinical and communication ?bridge? between the women and traditional health care venues. A small nursing team helps connect the women to community resources to promote ongoing and preventive health care and provides follow-up care at the busiest shelter sites. The board, volunteers and staff of Women of Means believe that all women, regardless of their specific situation, need quality, compassionate health care provided in a manner that respects their dignity. To extend this philosophy, Women of Means provides training for students and medical professionals in culturally relevant medical practices for this vulnerable population.

Women of Means provides health care to women who are homeless or marginally housed in Boston. Volunteer physicians go directly into women?s shelters and drop-in centers to give pro bono, episodic care and distribute free, over-the-counter medical supplies to women in need. Volunteers are asked a time commitment of at least four hours per month, for one year. They must be licensed in the state of Massachusetts and carry active ?moonlighting? malpractice coverage.

Women of Means? volunteer physicians, who typically work in "mainstream" practices, provide pro bono, medical care at a regular contracted time for a minimum of one year in shelters, soup kitchens and day programs for homeless women. Each volunteer takes part in an orientation and placement program that offers training and ensures a good fit between the doctor and the shelter site. The majority of doctors have volunteered past the one-year requirement.
