One way you can do just that is to be a hospice volunteer. You have something special to offer hospice patients. Something only you can provide, because you are an individual. Our hospice patients need the gift of your presence and your talents. What would you do as a hospice volunteer? The typical need begins with offering companionship, friendship, and emotional support to the patient and family. Patients can be supported and assisted in many ways including: chatting with them, listening to their stories, reading, singing, playing music, or just sitting quietly. Other patients may need laundry services or light housekeeping. You will be matched with a patient who needs the skills you wish to provide. Other opportunities for serving patients include doing special projects such as providing homemade crafts (for example, pillows, blankets, etc.), to patients who need them or offering your clerical skills to help in the office. We understand that volunteers are already busy with jobs, families, etc. Training and volunteer activities can easily be planned around your schedule. Patient visits take place where the patients reside which is usually either in their home or in a care center. Other activities can take place at the Peoplefirst office, located on the west side of Indianapolis, or at the volunteer's home. You will need to provide your own transportation. An excellent orientation and training program prepares a new volunteer for success and enjoyment as a hospice volunteer. It is easy to get started on this new and rewarding journey to make a difference in someone else's life as well as your own. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and should have a desire to serve terminally ill patients and their families, assisting the patient to live as fully as possible.
