Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
BruinHope seeks to acknowledge the dividing wall of privilege and to engage and challenge ourselves to serve toward lasting change. The grassroots of this project have been sprouted with the desire to see lasting change in communities through acknowledging the origin of privilege by way of cultural education. We are committed to being a sensitively informed body, tightly knit around the desire to see hope delivered and prosper amongst the needy. In other words, we seek to not only serve underprivileged children such as the orphans in Hogar-Infantil, Tijuana, Mexico, but also learn in order to serve compassionately. Come serve and learn with us! The inspiration to begin BruinHope arose in 2003, when a group of UCLA students visited an orphanage and a community center in Tijuana, Mexico and realized that there is dire need to help underprivileged children in the area. The students visited Hogar-Infantil, an orphanage in La Gloria, TJ, housing 53 orphans and El Centro de Comunidad, a community center located in Tecolote, TJ which serves as an educational facility as well as a safe haven for about 40 children that range from 7-16 years and about 20 adults per year. During the initial visits it was determined that both facilities needed many repairs and improvements, and soon a full assessment was taken. It was also determined that the children at the orphanage are in great need of relationships and company as they live without families and can become very lonely.
