MS Society Camp Nurse needed for

Position Summary: Oversee the care and medical treatment of campers and administer medications and treatments.









Responsibilities / Duties: Oversee the care and medical treatment of campers and administer medications and treatments, as needed. Maintain appropriate documentation on each camper and work with peer nurses, cabin leaders, camp director or camp doctor to resolve medical care issues. Teach and direct volunteers on the care of each camper, including transferring and using a patient lift. Communicate campers needs for additional medications to the appropriate person. Maintain cabin supply box and fanny pack. Secure additional supplies from the health center, make supplies available to campers and return supplies to the loading area when departing. Fulfill on-call duty (12 hour shift) 1 or 2 times during camp. Call campers, family members, or care partners to verify needs before camp begins.









Qualifications: Must be a licensed nurse, professional experience preferred. Acts professionally and has ability to work and effectively communicate with all types of people. Ability to solve problems and know who to contact at camp for help as needed. Have a positive, open attitude with a willingness to learn and try new things. Provide care by being able to assist in lifting and transferring campers. Work with campers and volunteers in a kind, safe, and responsible manner. Maintain a daily routine that may stretch from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.









Key Information: All campers and volunteers will be on the Lakeside of camp. In order to provide an opportunity to get a full nights rest, volunteers will have the option to sleep in a different location, at Camp Courage, on some nights. Independent campers will be housed together in the same cabins. 80 campers, living with different stages of multiple sclerosis, are expected for each of the camps. Numbers may change according to camper applications and the number of volunteers recruited. Six to eight activity programs will be offered during the morning and afternoon sessions. Comfort Keepers will provide staff to assist campers with personal care in the morning, evening and to turn campers in the middle of the Check the camp channel on the National MS Societys website, www.mssociety.org, to view camp pictures.

MS Society Youth Camp Nurse needed for
Opportunity Description: Provide general and specific medical care to campers, volunteers and Chapter staff as necessary during the course of MS Youth Camp Program: MS Youth Camp

Location: Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, Finland, Minn.









Position Summary: The youth camp nurse provides: general and specific medical care to campers, volunteers and Chapter staff as necessary during the course of MS Youth Camp; basic health education to campers as appropriate or requested by youth camp director or lead counselors; and a short orientation to typical health needs/concerns during staff training prior to camp. In acute or emergency situations the lead nurse coordinates care with other medical personnel and may communicate with parents. In the event of a camp-wide emergency, the lead nurse acts as part of the Core Emergency Team (youth camp director, volunteer coordinator, behavioral specialist, lead nurse) to determine and coordinate responses. The lead nurse also oversees any additional nurses or student nurses, coordinating care and availability as a team and assuring that team members receive adequate breaks during the course of camp.









Responsibilities / Duties: Before camp; Assist camp director with reviewing special care needs and plans for any campers with special health needs. May require communicating with parents and/or health professionals as necessary or requested by camp director, and creating written follow-up care plan for camp. Coordinate plan with camp director for providing overview of typical camp health concerns during staff training. During training; Provide overview to volunteer and Chapter staff of typical health concerns and appropriate first aid responses (sunburn, heat exhaustion, bug bites, bee stings, etc.) Set up nurses’ station and organize supplies and equipment. Meet with additional nurses or student nurses (if any) to establish procedures and create nurses’ station coverage schedule. During camp Provide medical care and treatment for youth campers, volunteers or Chapter staff Maintain comprehensive record log of any care or treatment provided. Maintain comprehensive record of medication distribution. Provide informal health education to campers and/or volunteers as appropriate or requested by youth camp director. Administer scheduled medications and treatment to campers as needed and maintain appropriate documentation. Communicate needs for additional medications or treatments to the camp director and/or other appropriate persons. Work closely with camp director providing regular updates with regard to care of campers, communicating any special concerns or treatment and consulting as appropriate in emergencies. Communicate any special camper care needs to camper’s lead counselor and coordinate provision of care with lead or designated counselor. When appropriate and as needed, interact with campers in a non-medical role as a chaperoning adult to monitor campers’ behavior, set standards for appropriate behavior and place limits as needed. If needed, help with general camp and activity preparations, room monitoring, supervision, bus loading/unloading, and clean-up duties at the end of camp Help provide a fun, safe environment for kids to play, learn and address issues related to MS in their family. At conclusion of camp Pack up medical supplies, clean nurses’ station and ensure return of supplies to Chapter office. Ensure return of medications to parents via bus chaperones. Before departure, review resolution or current condition of any special or ongoing medical circumstances with camp director. Before departure, turn all medical records over to camp director, including medical log and medication log. Following camp, communicate with parents regarding their child(ren)’s medical condition or experience at camp, as requested by and with approval of camp director.









Qualifications: Must be a licensed RN or LPN in Minnesota, professional nursing experience preferred Must be physically able to provide treatment and pass medications Must work well with young people, be able to participate in outdoor recreation programs, communicate effectively, take initiative, work as a team member and be flexible about responsibilities Ability to problem solve is necessary. Must be able to interact with youth and other volunteers in a kind, safe and responsible manner Must set a good example for young people in behavior and decorum Must have a positive and open attitude with a willingness to learn and try new things. Must have the ability to maintain a lengthy daily routine for the duration of camp. Must be at least 18 years of age.
