We Need Your Help
Cedars-Sinai Volunteers serve throughout the Medical Center, including in nursing units, the new Suzanne and David Saperstein Critical Care Tower and the Helping Hand Gift Shop. Volunteers also work in specialized areas, such as cardiology, gastrointestinal, maternity, pediatrics, surgery and the Chaplaincy Department. A few of the many services our volunteers perform include:

Providing patients and their families with companionship.
Distributing donated magazines to patients, families and visitors.
Helping patients fill out their menus and assisting them during mealtimes.
Staffing the information desks.
Escorting surgery patients arriving at the Medical Center and serving as liaison to the Surgical Recovery Rooms.
Providing clerical and administrative support by performing light computer work, filing, answering phones, making copies, etc.
Participating in the POOCH (Pets Offer Ongoing Caring and Healing) program where volunteers and their dogs assist in the healing process. A screening/evaluation is required prior to participation in this program.

Teen Volunteers
Our Teen Volunteer Program provides an exciting opportunity and enriching experience for teens by allowing them to volunteer in a real healthcare environment. Teen Volunteers can see how a hospital is organized and learn about all types of people that Cedars-Sinai Medical Center employs. It is also an excellent way to learn about the many career opportunities available in the medical field.

Two teen volunteer sessions are offered each year in October (Academic Session) and in June (Summer Session).

This year's Teen Academic Session which runs from Nov. 3, 2005 - April 30, 2006 is NOW CLOSED.

Teen Volunteer Opportunities:

Perform duties such as help staff answer phones and other departmental duties
Help with computer work and filing
Visit with patients
Help deliver flowers to patients
Volunteer in the Helping Hand Gift Shop
The requirements for the Teen Volunteer Program you must:

Be between the ages of 14 and 18 years old

Independent Student Volunteers
If you need to gain experience in exchange for school credit or want exposure to clinical areas or research in a volunteer capacity to assist you in determining your career path, the Independent Student (IS) Program is designed for you. Running continuously throughout the year, independent student volunteers are managed by the Office of Academic Affairs and the Volunteer Services Department. Candidates for our Independent Student Program must submit:

A health clearance from Employee Health Services
Results of a recent tuberculin skin test
Documentation of immunization history, including measles, mumps, rubella and chicken pox
If your immunization history cannot be verified, a titer (blood) test will be performed free of charge at Cedars-Sinai following your acceptance into the program. You will also be required to attend an IS orientation session before beginning your assignment.

Applying to Become an Independent Student Volunteer
If you are interested in volunteering in a clinical position please contact the IS Clinical Coordinator at (310) 423-5231 and complete the registration packet below. For research volunteer positions please e-mail Elsa Aguilar.

Adult Volunteers
Adult volunteers derive a great deal of satisfaction from performing their duties at the Medical Center. Whether providing patients with companionship, bringing them reading material or helping them with simple tasks, the volunteers' efforts are inevitably met with sincere, heartfelt appreciation. Our adult volunteers also help round out the staff at Cedars-Sinai by performing clerical duties or assisting in the various departments.

To become an adult volunteer, simply fill out the adult application* from the Volunteer Services Department. After we have reviewed your application, you will be invited to an interview to help find the best match for your particular abilities and interests. Once you have been accepted, you will be asked to provide a health clearance from Employee Health Services, along with the results of a recent tuberculin skin test and documentation of your immunization history, including measles, mumps, rubella and chicken pox.

You will also be required to attend a four-hour general volunteer orientation, which will help prepare you to assume your role as a Cedars-Sinai volunteer. The orientation is held twice each month, with times determined once you have been accepted.

For more information, please call Volunteer Services at (310) 423-5231.
