Current Volunteer Opportunities (Unpaid Positions)
MRC Medical Volunteer needed for More than 1 year
Opportunity Description: As a health care professional in our community, your assistance is greatly needed. The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a nationwide initiative, organized on the local level through the Franklin County Board of Health and Columbus Public Health, designed to lead the health care volunteer effort in the event of a disaster. This could include treatment of victims of a large-scale disaster or epidemic, administration of vaccines during a mass vaccination, distribution of drugs during a chemical or biological attack, or other health emergency situation. The MRC provides assistance to our local emergency teams and allows for the sustainability and continuity of services following an event. Some MRC volunteers also choose to serve outside of Franklin County, as many did with the hurricane Katrina disaster. All volunteers are asked to complete our MRC 101 course and chose from two levels of volunteerism. The Responder tier will complete this course and will become active only in the case of disaster. The Leadership tier of volunteers will complete several trainings, prepare for specific leadership roles in the case of disaster, and assist with MRC activities throughout the year. No times and dates have been set for these trainings, as we are still in the development stages. Why is signing up now so important? In previous national disasters, such as September 11th, 2001, and hurricane Katrina, the local public health infrastructure was overwhelmed and needed help. Volunteers arriving at the incident site, without being trained, without known credentials or without being affiliated with an organization, often hurt instead of help recovery efforts despite their best intentions. Through hard lessons learned, we now know counties experiencing a disaster situation need pre-credentialed, screened and trained medical professionals. The MRC meets these needs by providing an organized, rapid response of medical volunteers in a disaster.
Total Number of Volunteers Needed: 15

Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
The Franklin County Columbus Medical Reserve Corps (FCC MRC) strives to establish teams of local volunteer medical professionals who can contribute their skills and expertise throughout the year and especially during disasters such as pandemic influenza, terrorism or natural disasters.

Vision

To ensure that citizens of Franklin County remain as healthy as possible in the face of a disaster, the FCC MRC strives to enlist and support capable, prepared, and knowledgeable volunteers to support and augment the emergency medical response during times of disaster and great community need. We will properly train our volunteers in emergency preparedness and other public health and support functions so that when the need arises, we are ready to serve. We will do our best to see that proper measures are taken to ensure volunteer safety, cover volunteers under the state?s liability statute, and assign appropriate tasks given a volunteer?s level of expertise.

The leadership of the FCC MRC will foster a culture of acceptance, recognize of the value of volunteers, and develop relationships with other response organizations and agencies to ensure proper utilization of volunteers in the case of a disaster. If opportunities arise, MRC leadership will also provide occasions for volunteers to assist with health promotion, education, vaccination clinics, and public awareness campaigns. Should our assistance be requested, we will also offer our volunteers the opportunity to support the health needs of other counties across the nation during times of emergency.
